The key to decoration is knowing what type of clothing you have to store, the space available, and how much time and money you have available to spend on the project.

This blog post will discuss considerations when decorating your closet and provide helpful tips for decoration!

Should you Decorate Your Closet?

Absolutely, you should decorate your closet.

It’s one of the first rooms that you enter in the mornings and one of the last rooms that you go into before bed. What other place is more deserving of fun and happy intentional decoration theme than the room that you enter before work and before bed.

Closet decorations do not have to be big or bold but they should be fun, comforting, and bring a smile to your face. The closet should be a place of comfort, not anxiety about “Omg what am I going to wear?”

We’ve created 5 of our favorite tips for decorating a closet to change the feel and theme in your closet.

Tips for Decorating a Closest

Get Rid of Closet Clutter

What is clutter? For some, closet decoration means getting rid of the clothes you don’t wear or that are out-of-date. Others think about storage and organizing their closets to create more space for clothing they want to store in it.

Purging your closet can be therapeutic but also a lot of work.

If you have the time and inclination, take everything out of your closet and sort through it.

organize your closet

Donate clothes to charity, sell them online, or give them away to friends and family members who may be able to use them.

This is a great way to start fresh with your decoration project!

Once you have cleaned and organized your closet, you can really see the potential of where you can add decorations. This includes identifying the correct size, location, and you can even start playing with what colors you’ll be able to use.

Measure Your Closet

Before you can do anything, you need to measure your closet. This will help determine the type of decoration that is best for your space and how much work needs to be done.

If you are short on time, consider using removable wallpaper or contact paper to decorate your closet. It’s an easy way to change up the look of your closet without doing any painting or construction.

In addition to wallpaper, painting the walls and shelves within the closet can make a huge difference in the feel of the space.

Some of our favorite beach and coastal pain colors include teals and corrals. Here is an example of a coastal-themed color pallet to help you choose.

Choose a Theme

Once you have determined the size and shape of your closet, it’s time to choose a decoration theme. This can be anything from beachy-themed decorations for a vacation home to sporty decorations if you are an avid sports fan.

We are personally partial beach or nautical themed decoration. We love seashells, ships, and marine life because they bring on such as happy feeling. Ever had a terrible day at the beach? If so then probably not more than 1.

Consider what type of personality you want your closet to reflect and choose a decoration theme that will make you happy.

A well-placed decorative anchor, sea animal figurine, or small canvas pictures throughout the closet is all it might take.

Create Storage Spaces

If you are short on time, one of the best things you can do before decorating is to create storage spaces in your closet. This can be as simple as using shelves or hanging rods to store clothes vertically instead of horizontally.

You can also use boxes or baskets to store items that do not need to be hung. This will free up space in your closet and make it easier to find the clothes you want to wear. The baskets can be the right color to help bring out the feel of the design.

The storage should act as natural room breaks and is a perfect place to add a decorate spin on the room. We love these Macrame storage baskets because they are both functional and decorative.

Use the Shelves for For Decoration and to Break Up Spaces

If you have a shelf in your closet, use it to your advantage! You can place decorative items on the shelf or use it to break up the space in your closet.

For example, if you have a lot of clothes that are the same color, using a shelf to separate them into categories can make it easier to find what you are looking for.

Break up the different colors and piles of clothes with a simple surfboard or a treasure chest. This helps organize and decorate at the same time. Otherwise, the clothes won’t stay in their piles and will fall all over the shelves.

Update the Closet Mirror into Something Fun

If you have a hanging mirror or a full-length mirror in the closet why not turn it into something fun. You can add a frame, paint it a fun color, or use contact paper to create a new look.

For a beach-themed decoration tip, we like to paint them a teal or a corral color, add some fake fish netting on the corner and even add some fun stencils of an anchor or easy designs. We’ve even seen mirrors with a treasure chest at the base of the mirror with coins spilling out.

You can place the mirror against the back of the closet door or lean it against the shelf. It’s a simple and easy decoration accessory.
